Over-ordering wastes money. Under-ordering stops a job mid-stream. This calculator helps you order the right amount with an appropriate waste factor so neither happens.
Every cut generates waste. Diagonal layouts generate more waste than straight ones. Complex rooms with lots of doorways generate more than simple rectangles. The waste factor accounts for this reality. 10% is a common default for standard installations.
The extra trip rule: One extra box of flooring or sheet of drywall in your initial order usually costs less than a return trip when you run short. When in doubt, round up one unit.
Straight lay hardwood or LVP: 7-10%. Diagonal or herringbone: 15-20%. Ceramic tile straight: 10%. Tile diagonal or complex pattern: 15-20%. Always check your product for coverage per box.
A 10x10 slab at 4" depth = 100 sq ft x 0.333 ft / 27 = 1.23 cubic yards. Add 10% waste and order approximately 1.36 yards, typically rounded to 1.5 yards.
Calculate total wall area (perimeter x height) plus ceiling. Divide by 32. Add 10% for waste and door/window cutouts. A 12x14 room with 9-foot ceilings needs approximately 22 sheets.
At 16" on center: approximately 20 studs for the wall field plus 3 for top and bottom plates and 2 for corners = about 25 total. The material estimator covers area-based materials — for framing lumber use linear footage.
Exterior paint covers 250-350 sq ft per gallon per coat on smooth surfaces. Rough or porous surfaces reduce coverage to 200-250 sq ft. Most exterior jobs require two coats.
